E50 – Voltron Grab Bag

Fighting RoBeasts with a giant robot made of other, smaller giant robots. How much further into the Super Robot genre can we get than that?

In our second Grab Bag episode, we talk about Voltron: Defender of the Universe, specifically the episodes in the Netflix Voltron 84 collection. Meanwhile, Michael has Dragon Ball Z Flashbacks, Peter questions how five people all pilot Voltron, and both hosts somehow forget to mention the space mice.

Also included: evil spa planet, Pidge is a maniac, a quick Alex Jones impression

Next week: Batman The Animated Series episodes 1-13

E49 – Dragon Ball Z Part 10

With Frieza defeated, it’s time for the next villain to be introduced: Garlic Junior. Remember him?

The Garlic Junior Saga takes a surprisingly Halloween-y turn, and it results in something a little different. Meanwhile, Michael is frustrated by the mechanics of the MacGuffin, Peter is irritated by Garlic Junior’s ultimate defeat, and both hosts breathe a sigh of relief that they can watch a different show now.

Also included: Turtle’s birthday, Goku in a Gundam, Dragon Ball Z romances

Next Week: Voltron ’84 (Netflix)

E48 – Dragon Ball Z Part 9

Frieza’s dead! Frieza’s dead! Everybody celebrate!

Dragon Ball Z puts forth its most interminable block yet, and Michael and Peter start to run out of ways to explain why it’s bad. Meanwhile, Michael makes a decision on a tattoo, and Peter tries out a King Kai impression.

Also included: Dragon Ball Z skateboard, Dragon Ball errata, Frieza’s infamous “5 minutes” declaration

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 91-102 (broadcast), 106-117 (Funimation)

E47 – Dragon Ball Z Part 8

The final battle between Goku and Frieza begins, and it would cool if it didn’t take so long.

As Goku punches Frieza and vice versa, Michael discusses the supposed death of Frieza, Peter talks about a Master Roshi figurine he once bought, and both hosts find they really prefer the Japanese episode titles.

Also included: Catching Up With Kai, The Big Green Wedding, Vegeta and Goku/Romeo and Mercutio

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 81-90

E45 – Dragon Ball Z Part 6

We return to Dragon Ball Z and find it much like we left it: tediously slow and occasionally hilarious.

Goku finally arrives on Namek, and starts burning through the Ginyu Force like we always knew he would. Meanwhile, Michael shares an anecdote about Philadelphia, Peter defines different types of filler, and both hosts struggle with the knowledge of how long the fight against Frieza is going to last.

Also included: alternate names for Namek, a proposed one-act play, and the dub transition

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 61-70

E44 – Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might

Gohan befriends a cute dragon while the world burns.

The Z Fighters are up to their usual tricks: watching Goku beat the bad guys. Meanwhile, Michael discusses the strange history of the Tree of Might dub and its censorship, Peter talks about mugs, and both dunk on the villain’s goon squad.

Also included: the diminishing returns of Dragon Ball Z movies, the mascot cuteness scale, and Michael’s low standards for DBZ goons

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 51-60

E41 – Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm reveals the Dark Knight’s origins, but at least we don’t have to see Tom and Martha getting shot for the billionth time.

As the Phantasm terrorizes Gotham mobsters, Michael examines his biases against the DCEU, and realizes the unenviable job of the people who are working on the franchise. Meanwhile, Peter compares Batman to major religious figures, and both consider the tools of pre-Batman vigilante Bruce Wayne.

Also included: repeated use of the phrase “the less said the better” referring to Batman’s more shameful media appearances, a pointless explanation of who Batman is, Will Smith’s Suicide Squad music video

Next episode: Tenchi Universe episodes 1-13

E38 – Sailor Moon Part 2

When Nephrite hits the scene, everything changes. Mostly for the better, some… not so much.

Sailor Moon gets astronomically better, as new villains are introduced, monsters of the week become goofier, and Luna becomes less of a scold. Meanwhile, Peter discusses the new episode formula, Michael is made uncomfortable by some employed tropes, and both rave about an episode with a subplot about date shadowing.

Also included: another addition to the “non-scary animals made threatening” list, why Nephrite’s better than Jedite, Serena stuck in a tennis ball

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 21-30

[NOTE: at 42:33, we have a brief discussion about abuse narratives as they relate to Nephrite and Molly in this block. It is also marked as a chapter, “Abuse Narratives re: Nephrite and Molly”. If you may find this content distressing, please skip ahead to 49:34, or the chapter labelled “Bet”. Thank you for listening.]

E37 – Sailor Moon Part 1

Sailor Scouts, assemble! Well, just three of you so far, I guess.

Sailor Moon starts off with lectures and ends with a boring action scene involving grounded airplanes. What’s not to love? Meanwhile, Peter wonders what a computer contest is and how it could be won, Michael bitches about Luna, the Scouts’ cat advisor/wet blanket, and both contemplate the possibility that this show won’t get any more enjoyable.

Also included: Over the top Jersey accents, elemental superpowers, fully animated Space Jam, the elegant simplicity of Power Rangers

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 11-20

E36 – Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone

There is a lot of wordless screaming in this movie. And courtesy of Scott McNeil, a decent amount of it could be used by a metal band.

In a rare re-revisitation, Michael and Peter see if their impression of Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone has changed whatsoever. Michael speculates on the inclusion of Gohan’s drunken hallucination, Peter points out that Garlic Junior looks exactly like the goblins in Chrono Trigger, and both consider that Garlic Junior is possibly the most effective Dragon Ball Z villain.

Also included: Scooby-Doo/DBZ crossover, Goodfellas garlic preparation, and another reference to Power Rangers monster of the week Shellshock

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 1-10
