E71 – Mobile Suit Gundam Part 2

It’s the start of Tomino Month, with the introduction of the Gouf mobile suit, and a sympathetic adversary.

White Base continues its trek towards the main Federation force, encountering a commando unit lead by the best Gundam character. Meanwhile, Peter appreciates the absence of Char, Michael talks about a memory of Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, and both hosts speculate about what M’Quve’s mines could be hiding.

Optimus?! OPTIMUUUUSSSS!!!

E62 – Tenchi in Tokyo Conclusion

When Tenchi finally tells everyone to get lost, they… do. Alright, we didn’t see that coming.

Ryoko reclaims her title of space pirate, Kiyone and Mihoshi rise through the ranks of the Galaxy Police, and Ayeka traps Nobuyuki outside his own house. Meanwhile, Michael attempts to explain Tenchi in Tokyo as a deconstruction of “harem” anime tropes, Peter is displeased by the design of Tenchi’s new sword, and both hosts appreciate the primary villain.

Also included: brainstorming new names for the “harem” genre, changing the topic by shouting “party!”, preferred wacky portions.

Next week: Minisode 6

Cartoon Roulette will release on April 11

E58 – Sailor Moon R Part 2

Serena never gets a break, does she? She’s constantly berated by her friends, her cat, her boyfriend dumps her, and now even a girl from the future is giving her crap.

Yep, life is tough for a Sailor Scout, and things only get tougher. Meanwhile, Michael absurdly compares Sailor Moon villains to those from Zeta Gundam, Peter reveals a strange choice of introduction for a new character, and both hosts try to determine what Darien’s problem is.

Also included: Zeta Gundam naming conventions, a disturbing lack of Melvin, and the craziest monster-of-the-week death of all time.

Next week: Minisode 2, where we discuss the American Sailor Moon live-action/animation hybrid, and take topic suggestions from listeners like you.

Sailor Moon R Part 3 will release on February 14.

E43 – Tenchi Universe Conclusion

Tenchi and the gang head into space in order to stop a coup on Jurai that has deposed Ayeka and Sasami.

Unfortunately, putting Tenchi in space does very little to solve the show’s problems. Michael complains about the one-dimensional nature of the show’s characters, Peter sandbags the dialogue translation, and both hosts generally get kind of salty.

Also included: spaceships in love, character karaoke, and a swimsuit episode.

Next week: Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might

E38 – Sailor Moon Part 2

When Nephrite hits the scene, everything changes. Mostly for the better, some… not so much.

Sailor Moon gets astronomically better, as new villains are introduced, monsters of the week become goofier, and Luna becomes less of a scold. Meanwhile, Peter discusses the new episode formula, Michael is made uncomfortable by some employed tropes, and both rave about an episode with a subplot about date shadowing.

Also included: another addition to the “non-scary animals made threatening” list, why Nephrite’s better than Jedite, Serena stuck in a tennis ball

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 21-30

[NOTE: at 42:33, we have a brief discussion about abuse narratives as they relate to Nephrite and Molly in this block. It is also marked as a chapter, “Abuse Narratives re: Nephrite and Molly”. If you may find this content distressing, please skip ahead to 49:34, or the chapter labelled “Bet”. Thank you for listening.]

E32 – The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest Part 2

Jonny and friends just keep trusting the wrong people. Also, sometimes monsters.

Both hosts begin to pick up on the formula of this show, and the cracks begin to appear. Meanwhile, Michael is irritated by Quest team’s seeming lack of struggle, and Peter talks about Medusa.

Also included: Scooby-Doo on Monster Island, whale internet skepticism, the forged Declaration of Independence, and being attacked by Air Buddies.

Next week: closing out The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest season 1, season 2 episodes 1-6

Gundam Wing

(REPOST) E03 – Gundam Wing Part 2

[NOTE: This is a re-upload of a previously posted episode, with correctly calibrated audio. Super Friends will be up July 5, 15:00 PST as per the usual release schedule]

On the second leg of their 5-Part Gundam Wing retrospective, Michael and Peter discuss Michael’s attempts to play the Gundam trading card game, and wonder what Lady Une’s problem is.

ReBoot

E26 – ReBoot Part 2

Nothing like a season-ending cliffhanger to cancel a series on.

ReBoot’s sudden leap in quality makes Michael wonder if there’s a sort of Stockholm Syndrome attached to watching some of these shows, Peter questions what a zoot suit is, and both hosts struggle to come up with synonyms for “creepy.”

Also included: reminiscing about a failed Deep Space 9 podcast, Enzo reveals his tragic backstory, and comparing the Megabyte truck from “Bad Bob” to Maximum Overdrive.

Next week: ReBoot season 3, episodes 1-8

E20 – Dragon Ball Z Part 2

In the second batch of Dragon Ball Z episodes, Michael and Peter find themselves forced to contend with Nappa getting blown up only to be totally unharmed, time and time again.  It gets a little exhausting.

Meanwhile, Michael makes an unfortunate comparison between Nappa’s “LASER EYES!” and Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon, Peter boasts about winning seemingly every over-under bet, and both hosts discuss the chilling connection between The Secret World of Alex Mack and Capri Sun commercials from around the same time.

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 21-30
