E46 – Dragon Ball Z Part 7

Pop quiz: who’s the best character to wish back to life, of these options: Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, or Piccolo? If you said “anyone other than Piccolo is a joke!” you were correct.

On Namek, things are starting to heat up as Frieza finally fights our heroes. Meanwhile, Peter feels anxious about Namekian Eternal Dragon Porunga’s impatience, Michael again talks about his appreciation for Frieza, and both hosts compare the Frieza fight to the duration of entire other series.

Also included: reactions to extreme power levels, other shows we’d like to watch, Tequila Gundam

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 71-80

E45 – Dragon Ball Z Part 6

We return to Dragon Ball Z and find it much like we left it: tediously slow and occasionally hilarious.

Goku finally arrives on Namek, and starts burning through the Ginyu Force like we always knew he would. Meanwhile, Michael shares an anecdote about Philadelphia, Peter defines different types of filler, and both hosts struggle with the knowledge of how long the fight against Frieza is going to last.

Also included: alternate names for Namek, a proposed one-act play, and the dub transition

Next week: Dragon Ball Z episodes 61-70

E43 – Tenchi Universe Part 2

Tenchi and the gang head into space in order to stop a coup on Jurai that has deposed Ayeka and Sasami.

Unfortunately, putting Tenchi in space does very little to solve the show’s problems. Michael complains about the one-dimensional nature of the show’s characters, Peter sandbags the dialogue translation, and both hosts generally get kind of salty.

Also included: spaceships in love, character karaoke, and a swimsuit episode.

Next week: Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might

E42 – Tenchi Universe Part 1

Tenchi Universe starts out of the gate with repeated spaceship crashes, and from there… well…

We’re back to the adventures of a nondescript teenage boy pursued by six alien women. And it never stops being weird. Meanwhile, Peter compares Tenchi Unvierse to reality television, Michael vents his frustration with a glimpse of characterization, and both hosts wish one of the aliens pursuing Tenchi was a weird jellyfish monster.

Also included: Giant Scooby-Doo and his ability to clean up cotton candy, Animorphs, and the dark fate of Tenchi characters

Next episode: Tenchi Universe episodes 14-26

E40 – Sailor Moon Part 4

Darien gets taken by the Negaverse and brainwashed. Meanwhile, Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus hang out and go to the hairdresser.

We discover the hidden history of the Sailor Scouts, and what really happened to the moon kingdom. Meanwhile, Michael references a children’s book by Roger Hargreaves, Peter highlights some of the differences between the dub and the uncut version in the final episode, and both try to figure out how they actually feel about this dub.

Also included: a Rowdy Rough Boys recipe for everyone to try, Sailor Moon’s version of being “sent to another dimension”, Sailor Moon and Sentai shows

Next week: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

E39 – Sailor Moon Part 3

All of the Sailor Scouts are finally assembled! Only took, what, 2/3 of the series?

Serena officially becomes the leader of the Sailor Scouts, and the choice is immediately suspect. Meanwhile, Michael has a startling vision of Serena’s possible future, Peter gushes about an episode starring Melvin, and both hosts theorize on how the series will end.

Also included: candid photos, which Sailor Scout we identify with, Sonic comparisons

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 31-40

E38 – Sailor Moon Part 2

When Nephrite hits the scene, everything changes. Mostly for the better, some… not so much.

Sailor Moon gets astronomically better, as new villains are introduced, monsters of the week become goofier, and Luna becomes less of a scold. Meanwhile, Peter discusses the new episode formula, Michael is made uncomfortable by some employed tropes, and both rave about an episode with a subplot about date shadowing.

Also included: another addition to the “non-scary animals made threatening” list, why Nephrite’s better than Jedite, Serena stuck in a tennis ball

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 21-30

[NOTE: at 42:33, we have a brief discussion about abuse narratives as they relate to Nephrite and Molly in this block. It is also marked as a chapter, “Abuse Narratives re: Nephrite and Molly”. If you may find this content distressing, please skip ahead to 49:34, or the chapter labelled “Bet”. Thank you for listening.]

E37 – Sailor Moon Part 1

Sailor Scouts, assemble! Well, just three of you so far, I guess.

Sailor Moon starts off with lectures and ends with a boring action scene involving grounded airplanes. What’s not to love? Meanwhile, Peter wonders what a computer contest is and how it could be won, Michael bitches about Luna, the Scouts’ cat advisor/wet blanket, and both contemplate the possibility that this show won’t get any more enjoyable.

Also included: Over the top Jersey accents, elemental superpowers, fully animated Space Jam, the elegant simplicity of Power Rangers

Next week: Sailor Moon episodes 11-20

E35 – The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest Part 5

Using QuestWorld to hack into people’s brains has become so strangely blase. But at least we get a time travel episode!

At the end of the series, we reflect on the specific episodes that made it great (or at least watchable). Meanwhile, Michael waxes pretentious about faux-classical music, Peter resumes his bet winning streak, and both hosts solidify their stances on which season they prefer.

Also included: the Hanna-Barbera Unlimited Universe team-up, Jessie’s a badass again, the return of Ezekial Rage.

Next week: Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone

Episodes recommended: S1E22 “Expedition to Khumbu”, S2E04 “Race Against Danger”

E34 – The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest Part 4

Watch out for those monsters, Quest Team! No, not the metaphorical monsters who are humans profiteering off deforestation, the invisible one trying to stop them!

Season 2 offers up a very consistent block of episodes, but Michael has some reservations about the writing. Meanwhile, Peter discusses his scale of animated explosions.

Also included: Monsters preventing historical tragedies, Jessie is a liability, the Triumvirate, and Surd in 2D

Next week: The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest episodes 43-52
